Wetting and Capillary Condensation on the Nanoscale

چکیده

Wetting and capillary phenomena on the macroscale are ubiquitous have been well understood. However, relevant physics mechanics nano-scale still remain mysterious. In this talk, I would like to discuss exploration of capillarity from a nanoscopic perspective, including wetting, evaporation condensation. At solid/liquid interface, liquid exhibits pronounced layered structure that extends over several intermolecular distances solid surface. Our recent studies shown such molecular detail could provide some new understanding century-old classical theory in field, as Young’s equation [1] Kelvin [2].

Nanoscale wetting on groove-patterned surfaces.

In this paper, nanoscale wetting on groove-patterned surfaces is thoroughly studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The results are compared with Wenzel's and Cassie's predictions to determine whether these continuum theories are still valid at the nanoscale for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic types of surfaces when the droplet size is comparable to the groove size. A system with a liqui...

Geometry and wetting of capillary folding.

Capillary forces are involved in a variety of natural phenomena, ranging from droplet breakup to the physics of clouds. The forces from surface tension can also be exploited in industrial applications provided the length scales involved are small enough. Recent experimental investigations showed how to take advantage of capillarity to fold planar structures into three-dimensional configurations...

Wetting and Capillary Condensation in Symmetric Polymer Blends: A comparison between Monte Carlo Simulations and Self-Consistent Field Calculations

We present a quantitative comparison between extensive Monte Carlo simulations and self-consistent field calculations on the phase diagram and wetting behavior of a symmetric, binary (AB) polymer blend confined into a film. The flat walls attract one component via a short range interaction. The repulsion between monomers of different types leads to an upper critical solution point in the bulk. ...

Capillary Condensation in Confined Media

We review here the physics of capillary condensation of liquids in confined media, with a special regard to the application in nanotechnologies. The thermodynamics of capillary condensation and thin film adsorption are first exposed along with all the relevant notions. The focus is then shifted to the modelling of capillary forces, to their measurements techniques (including SFA, AFM and crack ...

Capillary condensation in cylindrical nanopores.

Using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we have explored the phenomenon of capillary condensation (CC) of Ar at the triple temperature inside infinitely long, cylindrical pores. Pores of radius R = 1 nm, 1.7 nm, and 2.5 nm have been investigated using a gas-surface interaction potential parametrized by the well depth D of the gas on a planar surface made of the same material as that comp...
